Services
The best way to learn as a surgeon is to watch and operate under the supervision of a skilled coach who is willing to teach, over an extended time period.
This is not possible for all surgeons who are growing their talent. It often requires huge sacrifices: travel, getting placed in a hard-to-get training post, family relocations abroad and being matched with a supervisor who takes an interest in training rather than leaving the apprentice to their own devices.

About your coach
Ronald Kam is a skilled and established trainer of ophthalmology trainees and fellow subspecialists.
He was appointed in 2018 as a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the largest centre for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in Europe. It is also where he completed his higher surgical training. The surgeons he has helped to train now work as consultants or clinician scientists in the UK, Austria, Germany and USA.

Ronald has been nominated for education awards by both Imperial College London and Moorfields Eye Hospital after receiving outstanding feedback from medical students, and for creating pioneering mock viva examinations for the FRCOphth final examinations. Feedback from his surgical apprentices has been uniformly positive. He has a special interest in teaching microsurgical skills, having done so in wet lab settings, through lectures and also in a book chapter.

He has coached several senior fellows in their successful applications for substantive consultant posts in the UK. He has provided special interview technique guidance which helps set his fellow or trainee stand out from other candidates who rely on model answers or boring answer templates.

His cataract surgical safety outcomes are exceptional. His posterior capsule rupture rate (a key complication measure in cataract surgery) is below 1 in 345 cases, compared to a national UK consultant-average of around 1 in 91 cases. He achieves this not through superior dexterity, but by making the right decisions pre-and intra-operatively, something that can be coached.
